The Carter-Cash lake house, on Caudill Drive on the banks of Old Hick ( local name for Old Hickory Lake) in Hendersonville. Tennessee, just outside Nashville, was destroyed in a construction fire yesterday afternoon. The house had been in the Carter-Cash family since 1970.
Cash bought it as a hard-living bachelor, faced his demons in its round master bedroom, and brought June Carter there as his bride. June referred to the house as "Camelot." After Johnny's death in 2003, just months after June passed, all personal possessions and memorabilia were removed, and the house went on the market for $2.5M. Barry Gibb and his wife bought it about 18 months ago for use as their summer home, and were doing some renovations when the fire broke out. Barry Gibb was in Miami, and was notified by singer T.G. Sheppard. The house and the Carter-Cash family played host to many notables, and Johnny created many of his renowned songs there.
It appears a spark ignited fumes from a wood preserver, bringing an end to a Nashville monument. Its loss has left the community devastated.
You have to wonder whether the house committed suicide rather than have the Gibbs move in.
