I started out trying to think of an appropriate title for this post, something witty and clever, but this appalling waste of UK tax-payers' money and police resources on a snipe hunt that has revealed nothing, solved nothing, and produced nothing except one sorry arrest and charging of a man who was allegedly a driver for the BBC in 1984, just leaves me unable to think coherently. So, apologies. Best I could do in a pinch - or is that a grope?
The continued sensationalism involving Jimmy Savile, accompanied by pie-in-the-sky promises to reveal a ring of paedophiles who have been running England for the past 80 years or more, has ended up in a chase for a chimera, during which people with no substantial proof except their "word" were allowed to accuse a dead man who wasn't able to defend himself - though when questioned "under caution" by the Surrey police in 2007, regarding the complaints of a Duncroft inmate about events occurring in the mid-70s, Savile thought so little of what he was being accused of that he simply showed up with a friend (presumably as a witness) after which it was found that there wasn't enough evidence to charge him with anything. Not that he was old and in ill-health, despite the protestations of some of the Duncroft women, who mistakenly thought that THEY had been questioned under caution. Er - no.
This now appears to be the case with most if not all of the 11 men arrested but not charged under Operation Yewtree.
Trust me, Jimmy Savile, Wilfred De'Ath and many others were sleazy guys with busy hands back in the day, but any young woman worth her salt could handle those sorts. Nothing sinister here - just grubby behavior on the part of men who should have had more respect for women, and the women perhaps for themselves.
Gary Glitter is a whole other animal, but he has paid the price and now appears to be living a life of rectitude. He'd be a bloody fool to do anything else.
I can't get my head around the idea of some woman going off with Jimmy in a caravan when he comes knocking at the door in response to a fan letter, while her husband encourages her to do so. I mean, who's to blame here - woman?? husband?? Who should have put their foot down and said, "Over my dead body are you going off with that Flash Harry, don't care who he is!" Right.
If some women still have that lack of self-respect, we're stuck in the blame game, which could go on and pointlessly on at more and more expense. There is no closure for the 'victims' here, just an endless circle of baseless accusations and no satisfaction whatsoever.
Mr. Smith, the only person charged so far under the no doubt hideously expensive Yewtree operation, may or may not have worked for the BBC. Apparently, their records "don't go back that far" - whut? - plus he was also nothing more than an independent contractor limo driver for some of their shows. There is absolutely no connection to Jimmy Savile or any other of the cast of characters under investigation, but as far as the press is concerned it's time to whip out the Savile photos and slap them back on the front page once more.
Just to remind the gullible British public where their tax money is being well-spent. And Jim can't fix that.
