Before his final appearance with the band in July 2005, Richard had not played with Pink Floyd since 1985. Initially, Syd and Richard were considered the musical leaders of Pink Floyd, and Richard's keyboard work was an essential part of the Pink Floyd sound. After the first split, when Waters insisted that Wright be fired from the band, David Gilmour, Richard and Nick Mason continued to collaborate on each other's musical projects.
On a purely personal note, when I first moved to London in 1966, my roommates and I had a housewarming party, and were very honored when Richard and Syd showed up. Syd was mysterious under a black, broad-brimmed hat, while Richard was natural and charming and apparently unaware of his own charisma. One of the good guys.
