The Beta Band live at Cardiff University on November 18
The sadly recently departed John Peel once said of The Fall that-they were always the same, but always different! This contradictory theory can be further applied to the Beta Band-who in their unique manner take us down familiar roads, but in a completely original fashion. Their challenging and uncompromising sonic stance has created a rock recipe of psychadelialternatavantgardubbluesoul, with indiemoperavelectroniclassicaloopsample, flavours! Apologies, if any musical style has been omitted, as it is only Norwegian death metal that has seemingly not entered the world of The Beta Band!
Does it make sense? Well a full house at Cardiff University (including radio and television presenter, Phil Jupitus) revelled in the multi-dimensional, aural landscape of the Caledonian quartet. In return Steve Mason and his technologically talented troops responded with a set not far short of two hours!
The boys are saying their goodbyes on their farewell tour, and with over thirty minutes of encores the Welsh crowd obviously made a mark on the fab four, who quite frankly had to be dragged from the stage. The set took in the peaks of a career that has always garnered critical acclaim but has fallen short of the mark as a commercial entity. Their new album, Heroes to Zeros with hits such as Assessment and Out-Side has been their most successful to date. However, the time to call it a day has been a decision that has been met with a mournful tear from an allegiance of dedicated fans, which came out in their droves to pay their last respects. The level of enthusiasm from the principality punters proves that The Beta Band will be sorely missed, and there is a hope that it is au revoir not bon voyage.
The Beta Band occupied the stage decked out as thirty something bankers on their lunch breaks. Yes! Tonight the guys were not clothed in their industrial overalls, but it was the traditional shirt and ties presentation. However, the boys offered blood, sweat and tears in the cause of their art! The Beta Band continues to defy stereotypes until their dying day, and their absence will lead to a huge void in the music industry. If you cannot find joy in such tunes as: Squares, Human Being, Doctor Baker, Quiet, Easy and the Siouxsie & the Banshees laden, Liquid Bird, for shame on you! Please go to the albums: The Three EP’s, The Beta Band, Hot Shots 2, and Heroes to Zeroes and bathe in a bevy of beats! It is Beta the devil you know, so get acquainted now!
